Mexico City, 13 July 2026 (dpa/MIA) - At least 4,490 people are dead following two devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said on Sunday, as the death toll continues to rise more than two weeks since the powerful twin tremors struck.

The official toll had stood at 4,333 on Saturday.

Rodríguez, the brother of interim President Delcy Rodríguez, said on X that 108 shelters had been set up to accommodate more than 19,000 people who lost their homes in the quakes.

Two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 shook Venezuela on June 24. More than 1,000 significantly weaker aftershocks have followed.

Over 850 buildings lie in ruins or have been severely damaged, especially in La Guaira, a coastal city near Caracas.
