Vance says Israel-Hamas ceasefire is holding despite Gaza clashes

Washington, 29 October 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The ceasefire between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas remains in place despite renewed exchanges of fire in the Gaza Strip, US Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday.

"The ceasefire is holding. That doesn't mean that there aren't going to be little skirmishes here and there," US media quoted Vance as saying.

The Israeli government said it had carried out airstrikes in Gaza in response to an attack on Israeli soldiers, while Hamas denied responsibility. The claims could not be independently verified.

The Wall Street Journal cited a US official saying Washington had been informed in advance of the Israeli strikes and had expected targeted attacks. Israel does not intend to jeopardize the ceasefire, the official added.

Vance told US broadcaster NBC that a soldier of the Israeli army had been attacked by Hamas or another actor in Gaza. While he expected Israel to respond, he still believed the peace plan of US President Donald Trump would hold.

Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, deadly incidents have continued. According to Gaza's Hamas-run health authority, more than 90 Palestinians have been killed.

Around a week ago, two Israeli soldiers were killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack. Israel has also accused Hamas of delaying the handover of the bodies of hostages who were killed.
