US temporarily lifts some Russia sanctions ahead of Alaska meeting

Washington, 14 August 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The US Treasury Department on Wednesday issued a license that temporarily suspends certain sanctions on Russia, clearing the way for Friday's planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said the exemption covers transactions that "are ordinarily incident and necessary to the attendance at or support of meetings in the State of Alaska between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Russian Federation."

The pause will remain in effect until August 20, OFAC added.

Washington has imposed a wide range of sanctions on Russian officials and companies in recent years, primarily over Moscow's war of aggression against Ukraine. These measures could have hindered travel to Alaska for those involved in the talks.

OFAC said that no blocked assets would be released. The license did not specify which individuals or entities are affected.
