US Supreme Court backs Trump on migration in emergency ruling

Washington, 30 May 2025 (dpa/MIA) – The US Supreme Court on Friday ruled that the administration of President Donald Trump can implement its restrictive immigration policy.

Friday's ruling reversed an earlier ruling by a federal court in Massachusetts that paused the administration's policy.

Dissenting justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor wrote that the immediate impact of the order would have "the devastating consequences of allowing the government to precipitously upend the lives and livelihoods of nearly half a million non-citizens while their legal claims are pending."

In mid-April, the Massachusetts court blocked the administration's revocation of a humanitarian programme giving temporary residence to more than 500,000 migrants from conflict zones passed by the administration of Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden.

According to the Trump administration, the Biden programme benefited people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

In an emergency application, it argued that the Massachusetts court did not have the authority to limit the executive's control of foreign policy and migration.

While allowing the emergency application, the Supreme Court has yet to make a final ruling.

The Trump administration is increasingly resorting to deportation to halt the flow of migrants. Deportations to other countries well away from the migrants' homes has provoked controversy.
