US military says wave of strikes on Iran completed

Washington/Tehran, 16 July 2026 (dpa/MIA) - The US military said it had completed its latest wave of strikes against Iran late on Wednesday.

The military's central command, CENTCOM, said US forces "struck Iranian command centers, air defense sites, missile and drone capabilities, and coastal surveillance facilities" to degrade Iran's ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM said it had used "precision munitions to hit targets in multiple locations" including Bandar Abbas.

Coastal defence systems as well as storage and launch facilities for cruise missiles on Greater Tunb Island were also targeted.

"The U.S. military is holding Iran accountable at the Commander in Chief's direction," CENTCOM said.

A tanker attempting to reach an Iranian port in the Gulf was also struck.

The Curacao-flagged unladen oil tanker was transiting international waters toward Kharg Island, a key hub for Iran's oil industry, CENTCOM wrote on X.

"The commercial vessel ignored multiple warnings as it attempted to violate the U.S. blockade. A U.S. aircraft disabled the vessel after firing hellfire missiles into the ship's smokestack. The ship is no longer transiting to Iran."

Trump does not want to set a deadline

US President Donald Trump had recently threatened Iran once again with attacks on civilian infrastructure. When asked by a journalist whether he was giving Iran an ultimatum before the US military began bombing bridges, Trump replied: "I don't like setting deadlines."

On Tuesday, Trump had threatened to destroy all power stations and bridges.

"Next week it gets really bad for them," Trump said. "We're going to knock out all their power plants. We're going to knock out all their bridges unless they get to the table and negotiate."

"They'll continue until I say it's enough," Trump said when asked whether the strikes would continue.

Trump had made similar threats in April, when he warned that Iran's bridges and power plants could be destroyed within hours in an effort to pressure Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.

On Tuesday, the US military said it had launched a new wave of attacks on Iran and resumed a naval blockade of Iranian ports and coastal areas. The latest strikes were aimed at preventing Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Washington.

Last week Trump declared the ceasefire with Iran, which had been in place since April but had already been violated several times, over. He announced further major attacks on the Islamic Republic.

The United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran on February 28. Washington and Tehran agreed on a framework agreement in mid-June aimed at ending the conflict and paving the way for broader negotiations, but the talks had already stalled before the latest escalation.
