Trump slams 'publicity seeking' Macron over US president's G7 exit

Kananaskis, Alberta, 17 June 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump has contradicted French President Emmanuel Macron, clarifying that his early departure from the G7 summit in Canada had nothing to do with a possible ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

"Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a “cease fire” between Israel and Iran. Wrong!," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

"He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned!"

Macron had said, in light of Trump's unexpected departure, that talks were under way. He stated that an offer for a ceasefire, as well as meetings and discussions, had been made but did not specify by whom.

The US government had justified Trump's early departure from the G7 summit in Kananaskis because of the Middle East crisis. Trump had previously suggested that Iran was ready to negotiate and that he would address the matter upon returning from the G7 meeting.
