Rome, 26 April 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump has said that Russia and Ukraine are nearing a peace agreement, urging both sides to meet for "very high level" talks to finalize the deal.
"They are very close to a deal, and the two sides should now meet, at very high levels, to 'finish it off'," Trump wrote late Friday on his Truth Social platform, shortly after touching down in Rome, where he is due to attend the pope's funeral on Saturday.
He added that "most of the major points are agreed to."
"Stop the bloodshed, NOW. We will be wherever is necessary to help facilitate the END to this cruel and senseless war!" the US president wrote.
Trump said it had been a "good day" of talks and meetings with Russia and Ukraine.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on Friday met again with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
