Trump and von der Leyen to meet days ahead of tariffs deadline

Brussels, 25 July 2025 (dpa/MIA) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that she is to meet with US President Donald Trump on Sunday in Scotland.

The meeting would come days ahead of August 1, when Trump said we would impose tariffs of 30% on imports from the European Union for alleged trade imbalances.

The EU has been trying to find an agreement with Washington for weeks in an effort to avoid the tariff hikes.

Von der Leyen and Trump had a "good call" on Friday, the commission president said on X, before agreeing to meet on Sunday "to discuss transatlantic trade relations, and how we can keep them strong."

Despite pursuing a negotiated solution, EU countries on Thursday approved a proposal by the commission to potentially impose import tariffs on goods with a total trade volume of €93 billion ($109 billion) if talks with the United States fail.
