Szijjártó: Most EU member states preparing for long war, not peace

Skopje, 31 August 2025 (MIA) — At the EU foreign ministers’ meeting Saturday in Copenhagen it became clear that Brussels and most member states are preparing for a long war, not peace, by wanting to send tens of billions of euros to Ukraine for soldiers’ salaries, drones, weapons and the operation of the Ukrainian state, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó wrote on X.

Szijjártó wrote there had been huge pressure for the fast-tracked EU accession of Ukraine, new sanctions on Russian energy, and six billion euros more from the European Peace Facility to arm Ukraine.

According to Hungary's top diplomat, the European Commission once again acted as a Ukrainian Commission, serving Kyiv’s interests over those of member states.

"They completely ignore Hungarians in Transcarpathia and our energy security, still refusing to answer the joint letter we sent with Slovakia on Ukraine endangering our supply route," he added.

In his X post, Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s stance on Ukraine. He said Hungary would support US President Donald Trump’s peace efforts because only a US-Russia agreement can end the war; reject Ukraine’s forced EU accession, which would devastate Hungarian farmers and food security; refuse to let Hungarian taxpayers’ money finance the Ukrainian army; and reject sanctions that threaten Hungary’s energy supply and raise household costs.

Earlier Saturday, ahead of the meeting, Szijjártó said he expected "a pro-war tsunami" at the EU foreign minister’s meeting.

"More money and weapons for Ukraine, forced EU accession, launching a military operation…Huge pressure to abandon our pro-peace stance. We will not back any decision against our interests or delaying peace," he wrote. mr/
