Siljanovska Davkova: Slovakia one of our most faithful and committed EU accession supporters

Skopje, 14 October 2025 (MIA) - Slovakia is one of the most faithful and committed supporters of our European integration and the need for EU enlargement, not only within the Visegrad Group but also through its active participation in the Friends of Western Balkans group, President Siljanovska Davkova told a joint press conference with visiting Slovak counterpart Peter Pellegrini on Tuesday.

Presidents Siljanovska Davkova and Pellegrini agreed that enlargement should be based on the Copenhagen criteria.

"It should be based on merit and results, not dependent on additional irrational political requirements that usurp the Euro-integration process," said Siljanovska Davkova.

She said the national foreign and security policy is fully aligned with the one of the EU.

"We continue to actively contribute to collective and regional security, because this security is ours as well. We need more cooperation, mutual trust and solidarity, not only within EU and NATO but also in UN terms," said Siljanovska Davkova.

The President noted that today's meeting reaffirmed the excellent bilateral relations and the will for their enhancement.

"I wish to see better cooperation in the economic sector and welcome the signing of the Cooperation Memorandum, which I expect will open new opportunities for projects, investments and business partnerships," said Siljanovska Davkova.

She said the two countries are tied by the joint legacy of Ss. Cyril and Methodius, while acknowledging the interest of the Slovak academic community in the Macedonian language and culture.

"This is clearly shown by the publishing of the first textbook on Slovaks in Macedonian language, as well as reinstatement of the Macedonian language instruction at the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra," underlined Siljanovska Davkova.
