Ankara, 8 July 2026 (MIA) - I sometimes wonder how the same statesmen, presidents, or prime ministers can behave in one way within NATO and demonstrate understanding while keeping us in the European Union maze for 20 years. It is time to overcome this, said President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova after taking part in the meeting of the North Atlantic Council at the level of heads of state and government in Ankara on Wednesday.

President Siljanovska Davkova said she had a brief encounter with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev late yesterday, with him saying they are not only neighbors but friends, "which is inspiring and encouraging."

She also met with Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who said he would stand firmly behind the Western Balkans, saying countries must join the EU is order to have stability and peace in the area.

Siljanovska Davkova said there is no better solution for a strong Europe and a strong NATO than peace, because Europe's strength lies in its capability to push reforms through peaceful means and promote democracy based on its fundamental principles and values.

She noted that the country is seen as a credible NATO ally, both in regard to the funds invested and its conduct.

"The other message from the summit is the defense spending and that European countries should assume their part of the burden after the push made by United States President Donald Trump. All countries have already made steps along that path, namely in guaranteeing their capabilities to organize their own defense, which is very important," said Siljanovska Davkova.

The President added there was a feeling of unity at the summit, along with resolve for realization of the tasks that were set at last year's summit in The Hague. 

Kemal Atatürk said, 'Peace at home, peace in the world,' so there is no better solution for a strong Europe and a strong NATO than a state of peace. And there lies the strength of President Trump, because besides the allocation of funds, he is consistently pushing for peaceful solutions to all problems," said Siljanovska Davkova.
