Skopje, 14 October 2025 (MIA) - Skopje is neglected, filthy and a mess because public enterprises have been captured by partisan interests, debts and inept leaderships. Citizens are paying for services but their waste is not collected, the public transport is dysfunctional and the infrastructure is chaotic. A real reform of public enterprises is my priority, so they serve the citizens not the parties, said SDSM Skopje mayor candidate Kaja Shukova on Tuesday.

Shukova said the public transport enterprise JSP would get new eco-buses and an e-payment system, along with the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

"The waste collection enterprise 'Komunalna Higiena' will turn into a contemporary center for waste selection and recycling, whereas the problem with the Vardarishte illegal landfill will finally be solved. The public enterprise for parks and greenery will witness a new era, with 10,000 trees and 15 parks in 15 months, along with regular maintenance of parks and green areas. The water supply and sewage enterprise will provide stable supply, get modern equipment and reduce water losses. The public enterprise for the well-being of stray animals 'Lajka' will turn into a real humane system for their treatment and care," said Shukova.

She added that Skopje would get functional and transparent public services, "because Skopje is a city that takes care of its citizens and because it is high time institutions serve the citizens not the parties".
