Serbia coach Stojkovic quits after shock Albania defeat

Berlin, 12 October 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic announced his resignation following the 1-0 home defeat by Albania in World Cup qualifying.

"This defeat should not have happened, I take responsibility for it," the 60-year-old told reporters late on Saturday. He said he had already submitted his resignation to the president and secretary general of the Serbian Football Association. Serbia previously lost 5-0 at home to England.

In a statement regarding the upcoming match on Tuesday, Stojkovic said, "I will not travel to Andorra to manage the team."

After the surprise home defeat in the heated clash with Albania, Serbia now sit in third place in qualification group K, which is comfortably led by Thomas Tuchel's England.

Second-placed Albania, on the other hand, can hope for a spot in the World Cup play-offs.

"The result was bad, I did not expect this," Stojkovic said about the match in Leskovac. Rey Manaj scored the decisive goal shortly before half-time.

Stojkovic had been Serbia coach for four years and led the team to the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
