Security situation ‘stable and under control’, says President

Skopje, 1 August 2025 (MIA) - The security situation in the country is stable and under control, said President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova after a meeting Friday of the country’s Security Council which lasted over two and a half hours.

At a press conference after the meeting, the President said discussions focused on security challenges worldwide.

“The conclusion was that regional security is stable and under control in the country and no security issues or dilemmas are expected. The main topic was the situation in the region: in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where we frequently hear secessionist rhetoric; the institutional crisis in Kosovo due to the inability to constitute the state bodies; as well as in Serbia, where there is a series of serious issues. But based on the arguments and the information we have, the conclusion was that these problems and challenges are not expected to be reflected in the Macedonian security situation,” Siljanovska-Davkova said.

Regarding the situation in the Middle East, Siljanovska-Davkova said everyone present at the meeting was “united in their views on the need for peace”.

“I expected the United Nations to be more engaged and more active, unfortunately, it has been marginalized,” the President said regarding peace efforts in the Middle East.

Commenting on the wildfires across the country, the President said they are currently under control. She claimed they are not just a result of the high temperatures, noting that there is “founded suspicion” that they have been intentionally lit. “But I cannot speak about that until there is evidence and while a preliminary investigation is underway,” she added.

Siljanovska-Davkova said she has been informed by the Government about a system they are working on for the prevention of wildfires with the use of cameras and drones “which would locate the hazards, and even the culprits”.

At the press conference, the President mentioned a new project – a modern information system for weather emergencies in the country, which she said would utilize AI and calculations to predict a range of scenarios in advance.

The Security Council also discussed the country’s Euro-integration at the meeting on Friday.

Security Council members include Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski, Defense Minister Vlado Misajlovski and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski.

Malinka Ristevska Jordanova, expert on European integration, Xhevdet Hajredini, former finance minister, and Vladimir Spiridonov, expert on climate change, are also members of the Security Council, after being appointed by the president in accordance with her constitutional competences.

Siljanovska Davkova also invited National Security Agency head Bojan Hristovski, Intelligence Agency head Gabriela Jakovleva and Protection and Rescue Directorate head Stojanche Angelov to the session
