President Siljanovska – Davkova signs landmark agreement at Nice conference

Skopje, 10 June 2025 (MIA) – President Gordana Siljanovska – Davkova, who is attending the third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, signed the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement).

The agreement aims at preventing the loss of biological diversity and degradation of ecosystems by enhancing international cooperation and coordination, the President’s office said in a press release Tuesday.

“Saying that although we are a continental country, it has made an excellent move by joining the agreement like many other countries, Siljanovska – Davkova stated: When we talk about water, we refer to water from creeks, springs, up to oceans, which is why it is important that as many countries as possible sign the agreement,” said the press release.

She added that the agreement introduces us to serious commitments because as a country, it is our duty to do everything in our power to protect water biodiversity and for water sustainability.

“Stressing that the state involving water and oceans is anything but blue, the President said things must change in the interest of their protection because all countries in the world will benefit regardless of whether they have access to sea or not – which means our country will have nothing but benefit from water protection,” added the press release.

At the Nice conference, President Siljanovska - Davkova met briefly with French President Emmanuel Macron.
