Plenary session set for May 28 to appoint new central bank governor

Skopje, 23 May 2025 (MIA) – The session for appointing the governor of the National Bank is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28. The Parliament website states the session will begin at 11 am, with the governor’s election as the first item on the agenda.

University professor Trajko Slaveski from the Faculty of Economics has been nominated as the next governor. He is expected to succeed the current governor, Anita Angelovska-Bezhoska.

Slaveski is set to serve a seven-year term, following a nomination by President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova. Before making her decision, she spoke with the candidates for governor. In the press release following the selection, she stated that the choice was difficult and that she was guided by the candidates’ expertise and competence, dignity and integrity, as well as the realistic possibility of appointing the candidate.

"I would like to emphasize that the selection was difficult, given the proven quality of all the candidates," the President’s Office stated.

VMRO-DPMNE expressed their support for the proposed future governor, whereas the opposition declared they would not vote in favour, arguing that the nominee is a political appointee rather than an expert, contrary to the tradition observed in previous governor appointments.
