Parliament Speaker set to schedule local elections

Skopje, 9 August 2025 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi is expected to schedule the local elections on Saturday, most probably for October 19, with the second round to take place two weeks later (November 2).

Citizens will elect mayors and council members in 80 municipalities and the City of Skopje.

The deadline for submission of candidate lists is at least 35 days prior to Election Day, with the election campaign set to last for 20 days.

The total budget for the local elections stands at EUR 9.76 million, two-thirds of which are allocated for media and paid political advertising. In addition, funds are earmarked for members of the electoral boards and distribution of election materials.

Inspection of the Voter Register begins 15 days after the elections are scheduled and lasts for 20 days. Eligible voters can check their data in the Voter Register and file complaints or remarks to the State Election Commission (SEC) or its local offices.

According to the Electoral Code, the local elections are held once in four years, in the second half of October. The local self-government is organized in 80 municipalities and the City of Skopje as a separate unit.

These are the eighth local elections in the country, after the ones held in 1996, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2021.
