Skopje, 29 July 2025 (MIA) - The Parliament adopted Tuesday a law that enables students from religious schools to take the state exam and enroll at universities in the same way as all other high school students.
High school curricula approved by the Ministry of Education and Science will be applied for general subjects, whereas curricula for subjects related to the Orthodox and the Islamic religions will be developed by the religious schools and approved by their founders, reads the law's elaboration.
Students from the Seminary School-Skopje and the Secondary Theological School "Isa Beg"-Skopje are entitled to take the state exam and continue their education at state universities and higher education institutions set up by religious communities in the Republic of North Macedonia.
MPs from the opposition SDSM said the law violates the Constitution and the country's secular principle, noting that the law lacks mechanisms for control and insight into the financing of the institutions and the content of the curricula.
Ethnic Albanian lawmakers supported the law, saying it is necessary for the country.
