St. Petersburg, 14 September 2025 (dpa/MIA) - A fire broke out in one of Russia's largest refineries following a drone attack in the north-west of the country, a regional governor said on Sunday.

Alexander Drosdenko, governor of the Leningrad region surrounding St Petersburg, said three Ukrainian drones had been shot down in Kirishi, a town 110 kilometres southeast of the city. Wreckage from one drone ignited the fire, he wrote on Telegram.

The blaze has been extinguished with no casualties or injuries, he added.

Earlier, images and videos depicting large flames over the refinery circulated on social media.

Kirishi, situated 800 kilometres north of Ukraine, hosts the Kirishinefteorgsintez refinery, also known as Kinef, a subsidiary of the Kremlin-affiliated company Surgutneftegas. The facility processes around 20 million tonnes of oil annually.

Ukraine is focusing on oil facilities in its defence against the Russian full-scale invasion that began in February 2022. Kiev's strategy is to disrupt Russian military fuel supplies and cut off a critical source of Moscow's war funding.
