Number of violent deaths up 24% in 2024: statistics

Skopje, 26 June 2025 (MIA) – The number of violent deaths in 2024 is up by 24% compared to the previous year. Of the total 511 violent deaths in 2024, over 68% were males, and the most common cause, in 78.5% of the cases, was accidents, according to State Statistical Office data.

The structure of violent deaths by sex in 2024, as in previous years, shows higher male participation with 68.1%, and 31.9% were females. 

In the total number of violent deaths, accidents had the highest share with 78.5%, followed by suicides with 17.4% and homicides with 4.1%.

In the category accidents, the group “other external causes of accidental injury” was predominant, with 38.0% of the total number of violent deaths.

In the category suicides, deaths by “hanging, strangulation and suffocation” were most frequent with 8.8% of the total number of violent deaths. 

In the category homicides, the group “assault by other and unspecified firearm discharge” participated with 1.6% in the total number of violent deaths.

Violent deaths accounted for 2.5% of the total number of deaths.
