Skopje, 27 June 2025 (MIA) - State-owned natural gas transmission operator NOMAGAS and Srbijagas signed Thursday a memorandum of cooperation with the goal of accelerating the realization of a project for the construction of a natural gas interconnector between North Macedonia and Serbia.
The heads of NOMAGAS, Muhamed Elmazi, and Srbijagas, Dušan Bajatović, signed the memorandum in Belgrade affirming the commitment to the promotion of bilateral cooperation and accelerating the realization of the interconnector project.

“This strategic project, which is of special importance to both countries, will strengthen the region’s energy security, promote energy transition and diversification of supply, ensure a more efficient balancing of supply and demand of natural gas, as well as integrate the regional gas markets,” Elmazi wrote in a post on Facebook.
The interconnector is set to connect the natural gas transmission systems of the two countries with a 70-kilometer gas pipeline – 47 kilometers of which will be on the territory of Serbia and 23 kilometers in North Macedonia.

Elmazi said a feasibility study and an environmental impact assessment are currently being drafted with support from the Western Balkan Investment Framework.
“The signing of this memorandum is a significant step towards enhanced regional energy cooperation and affirms the shared vision of the two countries for the development of a safe, stable and integrated market of natural gas in Southeast Europe,” the NOMAGAS head said.
