National Opera and Ballet presents 'Giselle'

Skopje, 27 February 2026 (MIA) — The National Opera and Ballet will perform French composer Adolphe Adam’s ballet “Giselle," celebrated as the peak of romantic ballet, at 8 pm.

According to the NOB in its announcement, the ballet's "White Act" (Act II) is famous for its "ballet blanc" aesthetic, where the corps de ballet performs in ethereal, white bell-shaped tutus.

The choreography was adapted by Irena Pasarić of Croatia, based on the original work by Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot, Marius Petipa and Leonid Lavrovsky.

The main roles are played by Marija Kichevska Shokarovska, Balázs Lőcsei, Ilijana Danilov and Boban Kovachevski, accompanied by the National Opera and Ballet dancers and orchestra.

The orchestra will be conducted by Eduard Hambardzumyan of Armenia. The costumes and the set were designed by Aleksandar Noshpal and Mihajlo Stojanovski. The light was designed by Milcho Aleksandrov.

"Giselle" had its premiere in 1841 and remains a timeless story of love, betrayal and redemption.

It follows a peasant girl who dies of a broken heart after being betrayed by a nobleman, only to return as a spirit to protect him in the afterlife.

The ballet concludes with a powerful act of forgiveness that saves her beloved's life before she vanishes forever. mr/
