Skopje, 29 May 2025 (MIA) - As part of a two-day working visit to Madrid, Minister of European Affairs Orhan Murtezani met with State Secretary for the European Union of the Kingdom of Spain, Fernando Mariano Sampedro.
The two expressed mutual satisfaction with the excellent bilateral relations, based on common democratic values and NATO membership, the Ministry of European Affairs said in a press release.
Murtezani welcomed Spain's support for the European perspective of the country and the entire Western Balkans. Special emphasis was placed on support for the opening of Cluster 1 (Fundamental Values), as the next step in the accession process, following the successful completion of the screening for all clusters according to the revised methodology. Murtezani briefed Sampedro on the ongoing implementation of the Reform Agenda 2024-2027 and activities related to the EU's Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, particularly in terms of digital and green transition, the rule of law, regional cooperation and economic resilience.
"Murtezani also stressed the importance of further Spanish support for the principle of merit and non-politicization of the accession process, given potential regional challenges if the European process were to be bilateralized. The meeting also looked into possibilities to promote bilateral cooperation, especially in economy, energy, defence, culture and education," reads the press release.
In addition, interlocutors discussed topics of regional and global importance, including North Macedonia's support for Ukraine, the country's positions in terms of the Middle East conflict and regional stability in the Western Balkans. In this context, the Minister welcomed Spain's engagement within the Berlin Process and its support for the region's integration in the Union.
Murtezani reaffirmed North Macedonia's firm commitment to EU membership, expressing expectation that with further support from Spain, the process will continue with increased intensity.
He extended an invitation to State Secretary Sampedro for a visit to Skopje, aimed at continuing dialogue and further deepening cooperation.
