Murtezani: Enlargement process hit by pressure and bilateralization tendencies, Copenhagen criteria our protection

Skopje, 18 June 2025 (MIA) – At a time when the enlargement process is hit by pressure and tendencies of bilateralization, the Copenhagen criteria are our protection. They are a reminder that the European path cannot be conditioned with issues beyond the essence of democracy, rule of law and functioning market economy. We appreciate Denmark’s principled commitment that the European Union enlargement should be based solely on the Copenhagen criteria – unbiased, measurable and equal for all, said Minister of European Affairs Orhan Murtezani at Wednesday’s news conference alongside his Danish counterpart Marie Bjerre.

“Denmark has always been a country with a clear and consistent position in the European processes – vocal in supporting values, consistent in protecting the law and principled when it comes to the enlargement of the bloc. Our relations with Denmark have their own history of trust and what’s more important – they have a future committing us to a deeper understanding and mutual support. The open dialogue we had today proves it. We discussed our bilateral relations, the future of Europe and North Macedonia’s place in the wider horizon,” said Murtezani.

He said he and Bjerre at their meeting discussed the priorities of the coming Danish presidency of the Council of the EU, which starts next month, all the while welcoming Denmark’s commitments to a stronger, democratic and safe Europe – Europe that is resilient, but fair, based on values but acting pragmatically.

“Despite all the challenges, our country remains committed to this process. The Growth Plan of the European Union was met as an opportunity for a new stage in the integration process, which is already producing concrete reforms and results. The fact that North Macedonia will soon host a summit of Western Balkan leaders is a recognition of our active role in shaping the European agenda in the region,” stated the Minister.

Thanking Bjerre, Murtezani said she is the first minister that tours the region ahead of the Danish EU presidency.

“This is a strong signal that we are in the process of accelerating EU’s enlargement, of honoring the Copenhagen criteria process without being polluted with bilateral issues, which is a topic for neighbors, not for the European enlargement and European access,” said Murtezani adding the focus should be on implementing the Growth Plan because “we need to bring Europe closer to our citizens.”

Asked about the action plan on minorities after PM Hristijan Mickoski has said it should be put forward, Murtezani responded he cannot share any information on its content since the document is under the Foreign Ministry’s jurisdiction.

“What I can share involves the roadmaps, the three roadmaps have been forwarded to the commission. I hope all three roadmaps will be finished. With it, technically, North Macedonia will be ready to open the Foundations cluster. As regards the action plan, what I can share is that it has been sent to the Council of Europe to be reviewed by experts. We’re waiting for their comments before adopting it and sending it to the commission,” said Murtezani.
