Mucunski: Real strength of democracy not measured by agreements, but lives saved

Skopje, 14 March 2026 (MIA) - The real strength of democracy is measured by the lives saved, not the agreements reached, said Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski at the international conference on the institutional and clinical aspects and solutions after the Kochani fire, held in Skopje on Saturday.

FM Mucunski said the swift response from partners was of extreme importance after the tragedy.

"The Kochani tragedy reminded us how quick things can change. In those moments, when every minute counted, the support from your countries, your commitment, knowledge and humanity helped in the saving of many lives," said Mucunski.

He added that 115 patients were cared for abroad, noting "every patient treated there was a new chance for young people to continue to live, dream and build their future here".

The FM said institutions had to urgently react by activating bilateral contacts and the European Civil Protection Mechanism, while thanking all medical teams, both at home and abroad.

"They worked under enormous pressure, and their commitment, professionalism and sacrifice were crucial in the first hours and days, when every minute counted," added Mucunski.

He said the country will remember the tragedy but also the solidarity.

"When we stand together, when friends stand beside us, when humanity is stronger than fear, it always wins," underlined Mucunski.
