Mucunski: EU membership talks remain top priority

Skopje, 19 March 2026 (MIA) — Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski said Thursday that the country’s top priority remains opening European Union accession talks and securing full membership as quickly as possible.

Speaking on Alsat TV, Mucunski noted that the government was monitoring debates within EU institutions regarding enlargement reform but there was no consensus among member states to change current rules.

"From what we hear, there are a number of ideas about how member states or groups of member states, and even the European Commission, see the future of enlargement policy," Mucunski said.

"But what is clear is that, at least at this moment, there is no consensus on any of these alternative solutions," he said.

The foreign minister also criticized the SDSM opposition party. He said the party lacked credibility on foreign policy, pointing out that despite making significant national concessions and changing the country's name, it failed to start EU negotiations.

"The result of their policy is best seen through what they have done and what they have achieved," Mucunski said.

"It would probably be more virtuous to apologize for all their past mistakes," he said, calling on the opposition to support the current government’s efforts "to restore some of our positions of national dignity" on the European path. mr/
