Skopje, 4 August 2025 (MIA) – Defence Minister Vlado Misajlovski told reporters on Monday that the purchase of helicopters from the Italian manufacturer ‘Leonardo’ is ongoing, with efforts currently focused on resolving legal issues.
"The procurement is underway. You know the previous government signed the contract, and there are many legal challenges. At this moment, the second installment of €70 million has been paid. We are working daily with a law firm to resolve every challenge we face," Misjalovski said.
He emphasized that the helicopters will be able to tackle all types of fires and come equipped with additional firefighting gear.
“We expect to have a working visit to Italy soon, where we will see firsthand what has been done and transparently explain the progress of the entire process,” Misajlovski said following the cornerstone ceremony for the new sports hall at the “General Mihailo Apostolski” Military Academy.
The contract for the purchase of eight new transport helicopters from the Italian manufacturer ‘Leonardo’ for the Army, valued at €249.5 million, was signed by the previous government last March.
