Skopje, 26 July 2025 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Saturday that the earthquake which struck Skopje 62 years ago serves as a reminder that life can change in an instant, but also that in the most difficult times, solidarity, humanity, and unity are essential for recovery.
"The earthquake reminded us that life can change in an instant. But it also showed that in the most difficult moments, it is solidarity, humanity, and unity that form the foundation on which we can rebuild our city. Today, Skopje stands as a symbol of resilience and solidarity," Mickoski wrote in a Facebook post.
He recalled that 62 years have passed since the earthquake in which Skopje experienced the most difficult moment in its history.
“The earthquake that devastated the city claimed over 1,000 lives, injured thousands, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. Today, 62 years later, we remember not only the pain, but also the light brought by people from around the world,” he said.
He also recalled that more than 80 countries sent aid, medical teams, food, tents, and support.
“The United Nations declared Skopje a city of world solidarity, and it was precisely that helping hand from around the globe that made it possible for the city to be rebuilt,” Mickoski said.
