Skopje, 8 September 2025 (MIA) - The question is not whether the materials will be declassified, the real question is how to prevent abuses and ensure this doesn’t happen again. This will only happen when there is accountability. And there must be accountability, Prime Minister Hrisitjan Mickoski said in his address at a formal academy marking the country’s Independence Day on Monday.

Mickoski said he sees calls to declassify the documentation about the wiretapping as fear and panic by those who are calling for it, as well as an excuse to distract the public.

“Surveillance and wiretapping have been done since the 90s. And from the same structure, almost the same people and agents, close to the previous government, who are operating the system. With these steps they strike at the foundations of democracy, at the constitutional order, and not only do the consequences of such a twisted system destroy generations of people, but also endanger the entire country, where they are placing the entire security apparatus on a platter. These strikes also damage human destinies, most frequently by coming up with situations, contacts, adding things that don’t exist. I am personally a witness to this, seeing the material from the surveillance conducted on me,” Mickoski said.

The Prime Minister said all materials and findings about the unlawful surveillance have been handed to the Prosecutor’s Office, noting that he would “closely monitor the case”.

“All materials from the institutions and findings of unlawful surveillance, from both security agencies, have been handed to the prosecution. We are aware of their low capacities and the low trust they have, but we will closely monitor this case, and they should know – this thing won’t be swept under the rug. This too is a question of the country’s survival. And in the coming period this Gordian knot will be untangled,” Mickoski said.
