Mickoski: Better to pay political price over food price measures than have citizens pay in the long-term

Skopje, 12 August 2025 (MIA) - We are aware that this will perhaps have a political price, but it is better that we play the political price in the short-term, than have the citizens pay it continuously, in the long-term, said Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski Tuesday in answer to a journalist’s question over an earlier statement that the Government wants to adopt “not popular, but long-term solutions” for the price of food products.
Mickoski said he has no dilemmas and is absolutely prepared to pay such a political price.
“Absolutely yes, because we are aware, after we located the problem, that maybe this will have a political price as well, and we have no dilemmas here, but it is better to pay that political price in the short-term, than have the citizens pay it continuously, in the long-term,” the Prime Minister underscored which he said in a statement Monday would not be populist.
On Monday, Mickoski said detailed analyses are underway and the Government does not want to adopt populist measures, but a permanent solution for food prices. Practice has shown us that margin restriction only spills over month after month before prices balance, he said, adding: “It is a trap we want to avoid.”
On Tuesday, the Prime Minister, alongside the Minister of Health, Azir Aliu, and the head of the Health Insurance Fund, Sasho Klekovski, and the head of the University Clinic of Urology, Bashkim Shabani, opened a fully renovated hospital ward at the Clinic for Urology.
