Mexhiti: Agreement with the United Kingdom a new opportunity to finally resolve hazardous waste problem

London, 22 May 2025 (MIA) - First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment Izet Mexhiti described Thursday’s signing of the agreement between the governments of Macedonia and the United Kingdom on partnership for the implementation of infrastructure projects as a historic day for the country.

"Today marks a historic day for the country with the signing of a financial agreement with the United Kingdom, enabling strategic investment in key areas such as rail transport, education, healthcare, and now also environmental projects. For decades, we have been trying to resolve the problem of hazardous waste at several sites across the country, particularly in factories dating back to the former Yugoslavia, where the waste poses a risk to both the environment and public health. This agreement gives a new opportunity to finally resolve that issue once and for all, contributing to a healthier life and a cleaner environment in our country," Mexhiti said after the signing of the agreement in the Winston Churchill Room at the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, MIA’s correspondent reports.

Mexhiti was part of the government delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski, including Minister of Education Vesna Janevska, and the Director of the Public Enterprise for Railway Infrastructure Sinisha Ivanovski.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski and UK Minister for Services, Small Business and Exports, Gareth Thomas signed Thursday in London the agreement on partnership for implementation of infrastructure projects.

Through the government-to-government agreement, Macedonia will have access to £5 billion for projects in infrastructure, healthcare, education, technology, innovation, and the environment.
