Liverpool edge derby, United beat Chelsea and Spurs fight back

London, 21 September 2025 (PA Media/dpa/MIA) - First-half goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike helped Liverpool earn a 2-1 Merseyside derby victory over Everton on Saturday.

Gravenberch hooked the ball past Jordan Pickford to send the Reds ahead inside 10 minutes before Ekitike doubled their advantage with a low finish.

Idrissa Gueye responded for Everton after the break, but Liverpool clung on for their fifth successive league victory to stay top of the Premier League.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot said “You can see how well we can play if we are fresh – the first 45 minutes we played. The second half was more difficult because of Everton, of course. We ran out of energy a bit but we didn’t run out of mentality.”

Manchester United won their second league game of the season with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

Robert Sanchez was sent off only five minutes into the match and United took advantage with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro scoring.

The game took another twist as Casemiro was shown a second yellow card just before the break and Trevoh Chalobah pulled one back for Chelsea in the 80th minute, but United managed to see the game out.

“It was really important,” United boss Amorim said of the result. “I think we deserved it, but we complicated our lives every time.

A Jan Paul van Hecke own goal salvaged a point for Tottenham as they drew 2-2 with Brighton.

The Seagulls had gone ahead just nine minutes in through Yankuba Minteh’s cool finish and Yasin Ayari extended the lead.

Richarlison pulled one back for Spurs before the break and they drew level through Van Hecke’s 82nd-minute own goal.

Leeds came from behind to record their second Premier League win of the campaign with a 3-1 victory over strugglers Wolves.

Ladislav Krejci scored on his home debut at Molineux before Dominic Calvert-Lewin responded for Leeds.

The visitors soon took control as Anton Stach and Noah Okafor both scored in quick succession before half-time to hand Wolves their fifth straight league loss.

Tyrick Mitchell snatched a 2-1 win for Crystal Palace to beat West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen cancelled out Jean-Philippe Mateta’s opener, but Mitchell had the final say to pile more pressure on Graham Potter’s Hammers, who remain in the relegation zone.

Burnley and Nottingham Forest settled for a 1-1 draw after Jaidon Anthony cancelled out Neco Williams’ powerful strike.

Fulham stung Brentford with two rapid first-half goals to fight back and win 3-1 against their west London rivals at Craven Cottage.
