Italy, Croatia opening doors to children from Gaza

Italy, Croatia opening doors to children from Gaza

Rome/Zagreb, 1 August 2025 (dpa/Hina/MIA) — Italy plans to evacuate ill Palestinian children from the Gaza Strip for treatment, in light of the worsening humanitarian situation there, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Friday.

Tajani said Rome was working on a plan to fly out some 50 people, including adults to accompany the children.

Croatia, too, is opening its doors to children from the Gaza Strip, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs announced Thursday.

"Croatia will open its doors to children from Gaza in the same way it did for children from Ukraine, with a focus on psychosocial support and education on the dangers of explosive devices," the ministry said in a press release.

The release notes that Croatia has experience in this field from its 1991-1995 Homeland War and internationally recognized expertise in mine action.

The ministry said the country was ready to accept children "should the conditions be met", expressing confidence that they will be.

It also noted that Croatia was already implementing projects for Ukrainian children through an open call, with around 700 children currently accommodated in Croatia.
