Israeli defence minister says 'significant' strikes on Tehran coming

Tel Aviv, 17 June 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has warned of new large-scale attacks on the Iranian capital, saying that major sites in Tehran could be hit imminently.

"We will attack very significant targets in Tehran today," Katz said during a visit to a site in central Israel struck by an Iranian missile earlier on Tuesday.

He added that the Israeli military's Farsi-speaking spokesman would soon issue another warning urging residents of Tehran to evacuate.

"We will continue to deal heavy blows to Iran," Katz declared, adding that the country's entire nuclear infrastructure was a target.

When asked for evidence that Iran's nuclear capabilities had already been damaged, he said there were "very positive indicators." He specifically cited the underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordow, calling it "an issue that will certainly be dealt with."

Katz also said that "more than 10 nuclear targets in the Tehran area" were on the verge of being destroyed, but did not provide further details.

Asked whether he expected the United States to become involved in the conflict, Katz replied: "The State of Israel is fighting this battle with its own forces."

He said the US role currently remained limited to defending Israel and added: "Any decision taken by the US will be respected, and we are grateful for any support."

Katz ruled out negotiations with Iran, stating that the war would only end once Israel had achieved its objectives — namely, eliminating any threat from Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities.

Tehran maintains that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.
