Israel, Hamas to open talks in Egypt on Trump's Gaza peace plan

Israel, Hamas to open talks in Egypt on Trump's Gaza peace plan

Cairo, 6 October 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Ahead of a hoped-for ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, representatives of Israel and the Islamist group Hamas are scheduled to meet in Egypt on Monday to discuss the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.

They will try to finalize an agreement based on the 20-point plan released by Trump a week ago.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the initial focus of the talks, which will be conducted through intermediaries, will be striking a deal on the release of the remaining hostages being held by militants in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

Hamas said a delegation led by its veteran negotiator, Khalil al-Hayya, will travel to the meeting in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, while Israel's delegation is to be overseen by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer.

US involvement includes Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that Israel and the United States are determined to keep the indirect negotiations with Hamas limited to just a few days.

Egypt, Qatar and the US are mediating in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Hamas announced on Friday that it would accept parts of Trump's plan. Trump then called on Israel to immediately stop bombing the Gaza Strip.

But several key issues remain unresolved in Trump's sweeping peace plan, including the disarmament of Hamas, which the group has so far rejected, as well as the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
