Skopje, 28 May 2026 (MIA) - We are seeing a normal inflation rate considering the global crisis. The inflation is not at an alarming level that might prompt price caps. The situation is monitored and if needed, the Government will implement all legal options and solutions. It is normal to have a slight price increase of certain products but this is legitimate if economically justified, said Deputy Minister of Economy and Labor Marjan Risteski on Thursday.

"We managed to settle the inflation even before the global economic crisis began. The National Bank and the Government projected it at 2.5-3 percent and it will certainly be a bit higher. The Government is ready to implement all legal options and solutions, be it through price caps or reduced VAT on certain food products. We will respond accordingly to the analyses coming from the State Market Inspectorate, institutions and ministries. All decisions must be analytical and economically justified, because any political ad hoc solution, as was the case before, leads to other economic turbulence that is difficult to get out from," said Deputy Minister Risteski.

According to him, the energy crisis impacts not only the standard of life and inflation in Macedonia, but the region and the globe as well.

"We want to make sure that the inflation rate is not much higher as was the case during Covid. We are seeing a normal inflation rate considering the global crisis. If we take into account that measures were in effect this time last year, which caused inflation to go up, we nevertheless believe this is not at an alarming level that might prompt price caps. Inflation is mostly caused by transport costs, which in turn leads to rising prices of other products. When it comes to food products or beverages, it amounts to only 0.7 percent. Inspectors are monitoring the situation and the Government will not allow for profits at the citizens' expense amid these difficult financial circumstances," noted Risteski.
