Hoxha - Sohlström: Sweden a key partner in environmental reforms

Skopje, 21 January 2026 (MIA) - Minister of Environment and Physcial Planning, Muhamet Hoxha, met Wednesday with the Ambassador of Sweden to North Macedonia, Ola Sohlström to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of environment and supporting the country’s European integration.

“Minister Hoxha expressed gratitude for the continued support provided by Sweden through numerous environmental projects, which contribute to alignment with European standards and improve citizens’ quality of life. It was noted that Sweden is the third-largest donor to the Ministry, after the European Union and Switzerland,” the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning said in a press release. 

During the meeting, current and planned joint projects were presented, with a particular focus on waste management, strengthening institutional capacities for Chapter 27, and activities to improve air quality.

Special focus was given to regional and national initiatives addressing air pollution, including the “Air Pollution Management” project, implemented with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and UNDP.

Minister Hoxha reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to continuing and deepening cooperation with the Kingdom of Sweden in the areas of environmental protection and accelerating North Macedonia’s European integration, reads the press release.
