Greece deploys ground and air forces to help tackle fire near Dojran

Athens, 9 July 2025 (MIA) –  Greece is providing assistance with the dispatch of two Canadair CL-415s and two firefighting vehicles with eight firefighting personnel, to extinguish the large fire burning in the village of Nikolikj, in the Municipality of Dojran, near the Greek border, MIA's Athens correspondent reports.

The Greek Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection said on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. that the two firefighting aircraft took off from Thessaloniki, while the ground forces that have been sent to assist in the large forest fire are already operating.

The Ministry adds that the deployment of ground and air forces is taking place following a bilateral request from the Crisis Management Center of the Republic of North Macedonia to the Unified Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK), and the Greek Government's response to the request for support was immediate.

As MIA reported earlier, Mayor of Dojran, Ango Angov, previously said in a Facebook post that aerial firefighting support is needed due to the alarming situation with the fire in the village of Nikolikj.

Firefighters have been battling the blazes at this village near Dojran for three days.
