Germany's Wadephul warns Russia: NATO ready for strong response

New York, 26 September 2025 (dpa/MIA) - German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Thursday warned Russia of a strong and flexible response from NATO following recent drone incidents in European airspace.

Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, he said the recent border violations show that Russia only understands firm measures to defend European interests and freedom, and stressed that NATO is capable of responding at any time.

Wadephul's remarks came after drones were spotted at several airports in Denmark, incidents authorities described as a "hybrid attack."

Danish officials said they do not yet have enough information to identify those responsible, while Russia denied any involvement in a statement from its embassy in Copenhagen.

The foreign minister criticized Russia as a country that disregards the international rules-based order, as seen in Ukraine over recent years.

Wadephul said Germany's armed forces will be strengthened to safeguard freedom, with Defence Minister Boris Pistorius expected to invest heavily in air defence capabilities.

He also emphasized NATO solidarity, echoing the US ambassador to the UN, who noted that the alliance will defend every inch of its territory.
