Skopje, 29 January 2026 (MIA) - The Speaker of Parliament, Afrim Gashi, told journalists Thursday he doesn’t believe the Government would propose amendments scrapping the Przhino-style caretaker government without first having an agreement between the parties.
“I can say there is still no proposal from the Government on this issue. I agree that when it comes to legislation of high importance, especially the Law on the Work of the Government, we should reach more agreement before putting the final vote to the MPs. But I think the leaders’ meeting was held to that end. I think discussions are ongoing. And I don’t believe that the Government would propose something so big and crucial without some agreement in principle among the parties, but it is up to them,” Gashi said at a media briefing.
Quizzed if the ruling majority is prepared to vote to scrap the caretaker government without the opposition’s agreement, Gashi said the law allows that but it would be better to reach an agreement.
"I think it would be better if we all agreed together on when the need for such a technical government comes to an end. If the approach is stubborn, unilateral, and rigidly tied to a certain position, that’s another matter. But arguments should be made, and we should reach a solution so that one day we can all say this technical government is no longer necessary. If that moment comes, I believe it would be good to adopt that decision together. I’m speaking in principle, the strength of arguments should be what matters in solving problems, not the special interests of any political party," Speaker Gashi said.
