Tel Aviv, 11 August 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, fellow journalist Mohammed Qreiqeh and three camera operators were killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a tent housing journalists in Gaza City, according to the Qatar-based broadcaster.
Israel's military late on Sunday confirmed al-Sharif's death on social media, accusing him of leading a terrorist cell of the Palestinian militant organization Hamas while posing as a journalist.
The military cited intelligence and documents found in Gaza, including rosters, terrorist training lists and salary records, as evidence of al-Sharif's involvement in planning rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.
Al Jazeera rejected Israel's allegations, stating that no independently verified evidence had been presented.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 230 journalists and media workers have been killed since the start of the conflict in Gaza 22 months ago.
Israel has repeatedly accused journalists in the Gaza Strip of working for Hamas. Some critics consider this an Israeli tactic to suppress critical reporting from the conflict zone.
Foreign journalists have largely been barred from entering the war-torn territory since the conflict began.
