Filipche: Government cannot handle landfill fire problem

Filipche: Government cannot handle landfill fire problem

Skopje, 15 September 2025 (MIA) – Every time the prime minister cannot handle a situation and cannot find a solution to some problem, he blames someone else, SDSM leader Venko Filipche said Monday, commenting on the recent fires in Skopje and the way the government was coping with the problem.

"Over the past 15 months, first he was being followed by drones, then there were attempts at destabilization followed by hybrid attacks, and now there is something happening organized by sundry foreign centers of power," Filipche said, adding that "no other prime minister before him has dared to exploit such a situation regarding security."

According to the SDSM leader, if the country had really been targeted by foreign centers of power like Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski was saying, and the landfill fires were indeed hybrid attacks, then the Security Council should have already been convened and army members deployed on the ground.

Filipche said Defense Minister Vlado Misajlovski, as well, should have addressed the public.

"All security agencies in the country should have been mobilized. NATO, being our strategic partner, should have been notified. None of this has been done. All these excuses the prime minister is making are just PR drama, in fact. Nothing is being done to solve any problems," the opposition leader said, accusing the government of "dilettantism in running the country."

"This team has no capacity to govern the state the way it needs to be governed," he said.

Commenting on the fire that broke out Saturday at a Trubarevo electronic waste warehouse, Filipche said Health Minister Azir Aliu had mislead the public about the air quality following the incident and should resign. He also said Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski should resign for not evacuating local residents.

"The health minister should resign. He lied to citizens that the air was not polluted. What did he do to prove this?

"The interior minister should take responsibility and resign, too," Filipche added, recalling Toshkovski's announcement of an evacuation that the government's spokesperson later said never happened.

Filipche also said an international lab should test the air, soil and water for toxic chemicals produced by the hazardous waste fire. mr/
