Euromelanoma 2026: Growing awareness of skin diseases among citizens

Euromelanoma 2026: Growing awareness of skin diseases among citizens

Skopje, 16 May 2026 (MIA) — Dermatologists from the University Clinic of Dermatology provided free skin screenings earlier Saturday in Skopje’s City Park as part of the Euromelanoma 2026 campaign, examining more than 100 people by noon.

The event offered checks for moles, spots and suspicious skin changes. Doctors also advised visitors on UV protection and how to spot warning signs of skin cancer.

Dermatovenerologist Zorica Zafirovikj said the event aimed to promote May as skin cancer prevention and awareness month, with a specific focus on melanoma.

She noted high public interest and a growing awareness of skin diseases among citizens.

"We are achieving the goal of early detection," Zafirovikj said, adding that doctors referred several patients with suspicious changes to medical institutions for further treatment.

Melanoma rates, however, continue to rise annually. Dermatovenerologist Silvija Duma said the increase was due to environmental changes and lifestyle habits, such as sun exposure and tanning bed use among young people.

"Protection starts from birth," Duma said, adding that it was becoming rare for patients to wait too long before seeking an examination.

Although anyone can develop skin cancer, early detection greatly increases the chances of successful treatment, she said.

As part of the Euromelanoma campaign, free screenings were also offered at various public and private hospitals and health centers. mr/
