Skopje, 28 January 2026 (MIA) – The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed Wednesday a cooperation memorandum establishing a clear and long-term framework for joint actions in the field of energy, energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and sustainable development.
Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Sanja Bozhinovska and UNDP Resident Representative to North Macedonia, Armen Grigoryan, signed the memorandum.
The memorandum strengthens institutional cooperation between the two sides paving the way for coordinated activities aimed at just and inclusive energy transition, strengthening of the country’s energy independence and resilience and meeting national and international climate goals, said the Ministry.
“The memorandum is a strong confirmation of our commitment to modern, sustainable and just energy transition. The UNDP partnership provides us with additional expertise and support to create and implement policies producing concrete benefits for the citizens, the economy and the environment,” said Energy Minister Sanja Bozhinovska.
The cooperation will be conducted in line with national priorities and UNDP’s Program Document for the Republic of North Macedonia for the period 2026-2030 with an emphasis on good governance, transparency and active inclusion of the public in the decision-making involving energy.
“UNDP remains a dedicated partner to the institutions in North Macedonia in improving sustainable development. This document creates a string basis for joint efforts in the energy sector, focused on clean energy, reducing emissions and an inclusive public dialogue,” stated UNDP Resident Representative Grigoryan.
The memorandum envisages joint activities in developing the energy sector, mining and mineral resources management, reducing the greenhouse gas emissions by increasing the use of renewable sources and energy efficiency measures as well as support in preparing and implementing national strategies, legislation and energy action plans.
A key segment of the cooperation is aimed at strengthening institutional, technical and human capacities by building expertise and improving the processes for creating and implementing public policies, as well as promoting transparency and inclusive public dialogue with special attention to youth, women and vulnerable groups of citizens. The partnership also envisages the joint organization of national and international events, forums and initiatives dedicated to sustainable development and energy transition.
The memorandum is concluded for a period of four years, with the possibility of being extended, and represents a significant step towards deepening the cooperation between the Ministry of Energy and UNDP towards a sustainable and secure energy future for North Macedonia, said the press release.
