New York, 26 September 2025 (MIA) – I believe I should constitute the diaspora council as soon as possible so that we can be able to nourish our relations continuously, President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova said speaking to members of the Macedonian diaspora attending an event marking the 30th anniversary of the country establishing diplomatic relations with the United States.
“We owe it to you and I promise, I will do everything I can to intensify contacts and to be together even when we are apart,” said Siljanovska-Davkova.
She urged them to remain united, MIA reported from New York.
“I always ask the citizens not to take division with themselves and not to make further division abroad. I wish we stayed united and I wish you stayed united here because everyone needs someone,” stated the head of state.
She said she feels great when visiting the country in which “in order to succeed you need to have knowledge and integrity.”
“I know you are the best and, unfortunately, the best always leaves. I know this is your second homeland. I apologise for the injustice you endured. I know there is a chance to change the homeland and also, to change humanity together, because the world isn’t headed in the right direction,” said Siljanovska-Davkova.
As for the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic ties with the United States, she said she wished the countries resumed their strategic partnership in the next 30 years because “we live in turbulent times and we need to gather all the strength because this is what drives humanity forward.”
“When sometimes I hear ‘America the Great’, I think to myself – it’s not bad in these odd times to have a friend who is ‘the great’, because it means you are not so small after all,” stressed the President.
Foreign Minister Timcho Mucunski and Minister of EU Affairs Orhan Murtezani, who are accompanying the President during her working visit to the US, attended the event alongside diplomats and public figures.
Since the establishment of diplomatic ties with the US, political dialogue is being enhanced with joint efforts contributing to improving democracy, security and stability in the region, Europe and the world.
The first liaison office in Washington was opened in 1994. The embassy was opened a year later.
