Skopje, 9 May 2026 (MIA) - The President of the European Council, António Costa, congratulated the Macedonian citizens on Europe Day in a video message Saturday, stressing that the country’s future lies in the European Union.

“Dear citizens of North Macedonia, I am addressing you today as future members of the European Union. On Europe Day, we celebrate our common European project, when our founding members chose unity over division and cooperation over conflict. They decided to build a future of peace, freedom, and prosperity on the ashes of the Second World War,” Costa said.

In the message, Costa stressed the country’s future is in the EU.

“We believe your future is in the European Union. A lot of hard work is taking place to make it happen. Your country has been a candidate for European Union membership for many years. It is time to take the next steps forward. Together, we will build a shared European future. Long live Europe,” the President of the European Council said.
