Skopje, 25 March 2026 (MIA) - Minister of Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski said Wednesday there are plans to adopt a national strategy for the development of the country’s media sector, with the Government assessing opportunities for new legislation on media, but also introducing a law on MIA for the first time.
“We will adopt a national strategy for the development of the media sector for the first time. Here we also have the dilemmas surrounding MIA – the Macedonian Information Agency, the Macedonian Radio Television, you as media, the rest of the media, news websites, content creators, journalists. Through the strategy, we will determine which laws need to be amended, whether we need a new law on media, whether we need a law on MIA for the first time, a law on MRTV, I don’t know. Maybe some smarter solutions will emerge too, but I am here to listen and we will lead this process, however long it takes – a year, a year and a half, two years – so we can adopt a solid text and be satisfied with the state of the media sector,” Andonovski told a TV Alfa interview.
The Minister said the state would take the lead and independently negotiate its relations with all stakeholders.
“I said that perhaps we will not adopt the strategy if we fail to reach consensus. At no point will I allow the situation in the media sector to worsen. We already have a very solid foundation, the media in our country are highly responsible and perform their work very well. This is most evident in times of crisis, including the current one. There are no inappropriate comments, no lack of transparency, no poor treatment of anyone – whether opposition, government, private sector, or NGOs. While we see negative trends across the region, I believe our system functions with high quality. My task will be to raise this to an even higher level,” the Minister of Digital Transformation said.
Andonovski added that the idea for a new national strategy for media sector development is also driven by the emergence of new types of media, as well as digital content creators
