7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes off southern tip of South America

Buenos Aires, 22 August 2025 (dpa/MIA) - A powerful earthquake struck off the southern tip of South America in the Drake Passage, the strait between the continent and Antarctica.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the 7.5-magnitude quake hit on Friday at 0216 GMT, with its epicentre about 710 kilometres south of Ushuaia, Argentina's southernmost city.
The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10.8 kilometres, according to USGS.
The US Tsunami Warning Centre initially issued a tsunami warning for the region but lifted it shortly afterwards.
