17th MakeDox opens

Skopje, 20 August 2026 (MIA) -- The 17th MakeDox Creative Documentary Film Festival begins Thursday and will run through next Thursday, with screenings at various venues around Skopje.

The festival opens at Kurshumli An at 8:30 pm, featuring screenings of "The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing" (2024) by Theo Panagopoulos and "To the West, in Zapata" (2025) by David Bim.

The festival motto "Only Dreaming is Reality" is a title of a Tin Ujevic poem as well as the title of a book by Macedonian film critic Ilindenka Petrusheva (1944-2025). She will be honored at a festival event Saturday evening at Suli An, where some of her closest collaborators will discuss her legacy.

This year's "Country in Focus" is Spain. In addition to screenings of Spanish documentaries, the festival will offer a masterclass with Spanish documentary filmmakers Miguel Eek and Xavier Marrades.

Two panels will gather state institution representatives to discuss the lack of movie theaters in Skopje as the European Capital of Culture in 2028 as well as film critics to discuss film criticism in the digital era.
