‘Women in Macedonian Architecture: Rebuilding Skopje’ exhibition opens in New York

Skopje, 11 August 2025 (MIA) - Architecture exhibition “Women in Macedonian Architecture: Rebuilding Skopje” showcasing more than 30 works by women architects opened Saturday at the Gallery MC in New York.

Citizens' association for support and promotion of culture Contineo 2020 said the exhibition will remain open until August 30.

“A result of several years of research, the exhibition in front of the American and international public presents the creative contribution of women architects in Macedonian architecture, with an emphasis on their role in the modernization of Skopje during the post-earthquake rebuilding of the city. The research also contributes to the ongoing global debate on the role of women in architecture and society, aiming to foster better understanding, greater visibility and cultural appreciation of the architectural heritage they have left for future generations,” the association said in a press release.

More than 30 works by selected women architects are featured in the exhibition in New York: Mimosa Nestorova Tomikj, Vera Kjosevska, Ljubinka Malenkova, Olga Papesh, Vasilka Ladinska, Prohirija Hadzi Kostova Peshikj, Nada Saveska, Donka Petkova Kostikj, and Rosanda Micheva.

These women were educated in the esteemed architectural schools of Belgrade, Zagreb, and Ljubljana, which were direct conduits for modernist thought from European centers such as Paris, Berlin, and Vienna. Upon returning to Skopje, they became instrumental in shaping the local architectural scene, championing modernist ideals among a new generation.

Authors of the exhibition are architects: Ana Ivanovska Deskova, Vladimir Deskov, Jovan Ivanovski, Tea Damjanovska, and Mihajlo Stojanovski.

The research was funded by the Swiss Embassy to North Macedonia in 2021, while the realization of the exhibition in New York is with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of North Macedonia, the Chamber of Certified Architects and Certified Engineers of the Republic of North Macedonia. The Macedonian Cultural Center in New York, the Macedonia 2025 organization and Contineo 2020.
